traditions, together
Ffidil Fawr brings bowed string players together at the heart of Welsh traditional music. It’s a welcoming weekend for adults who want to play, learn and contribute to a living tradition, whatever your starting point.
Across the weekend, we share tunes, explore style and deepen our playing in a supportive, open atmosphere. There’s space to ask questions, to try things out, and to enjoy the simple power of strings playing side by side. In one weekend we create a warm and welcoming community sharing traditions and skills. Join us! We’d love to welcome you!
It’s not just about the fiddle, or the music It’s about being a human with other humans

● Classes
Time with the Tutors
Fiddle and Viola
Delve into the dynamic tradition of fiddle playing in Wales
These sessions are all about playing together, exploring tunes, and figuring things out as you go. There’s space for everyone, whether you read music, learn by ear, or just want to have a go. You’ll work alongside other players, try new techniques, and share ideas, with guidance from tutors who are there to help and inspire rather than instruct. It’s about enjoying the music, taking on challenges at your own pace, and being part of a friendly, musical community.
Cello and Double Bass
Find a whole new world of rhythm and tune playing
These sessions are about finding your place in the tradition as a bass instrument. Whether you’re exploring deep, rich tones of the lower strings for the first time or looking to expand your technique, there’s room to experiment, ask questions, and try things at your own pace. You’ll play alongside others, share ideas, and get gentle guidance from tutors who are there to support and encourage. It’s about enjoying the sound, connecting with the group, and discovering new ways to make music on your instrument.
● Weekend Life
A Weekend at Stackpole
A weekend at the Stackpole Centre means settling into a relaxed, beautiful place in the heart of the Stackpole Estate in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Set among rolling woodlands, freshwater lakes and just a short walk from stunning sandy beaches like Barafundle, it’s a lovely base for a mix of focused music sessions and time outdoors. The converted stone buildings offer comfortable group accommodation and spaces for workshops, while the surrounding paths, coast and nature invite you to explore, breathe, and be in the moment between classes and ensemble playing. It’s a setting that naturally brings together music, community and the peace of the Pembrokeshire coast.
